When establishing the Yokohama College of Pharmacy, one of the aims was to nurture practical pharmacists, based on the newly passed School Education Act which provided an education by way of a six year pharmaceutical sciences course. The Yokohama College of Pharmacy however, also pays great attention to subjects that were taught only briefly under the previous four year system, and teaches oriental empirical treatment, the understanding of the overall medical work including paramedical to enhance cooperation in medical teamwork as well as the various environmental factors which have an influence on health, other than “drugs”. With an awareness of all these matters we strive to provide students with an education that enables them to work as pharmacists out in the world. Our aim is to educate students as 21st century pharmacists capable of working not just in Japan but world wide through the knowledge and experience gained by life on the campus and the teaching faculty. |

The health care trend in the 21st century is thought to be shifting toward a “personalization of pharmaceutical treatment” and putting more value on “preventive care” which precedes therapeutic management of diseases. On the other hand, the “virtue of the proper use of pharmaceutical products” and “prevention of medical accidents” is also important from the point of view of avoidance of malpractice within medicine. The purpose of our institution is to nurture efficient pharmacists who meet the needs of this era, since pharmacists will play a vital role in all of these issues. |

In 2002, the Model Core Curriculum for Pharmaceutical Education was announced by the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan, for the improvement and enhancement of the recently introduced six year course. In addition to this curriculum, we provide a well-designed six-year-program reinforced by the liberal arts, clinical education and long term on-the-job training, in line with the recommendation by the Council of Researchers for the Improvement and Enhancement of Pharmaceutical Education. Through our specialised curriculum we nurture capable pharmacists who can contribute to “personalized medication” and “preventive care”. |
